HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid

This course is suitable for ANYONE! Those in education, sport, travel, community care, swim schools, recreation clubs and the general public. It provides the knowledge and skills to be able to assess and manage a range of first aid situations prior to the arrival of medical/other assistance. Information is based on the current Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid (previously HLTAID001. This course incorporates HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation and HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support.

Our first aid course combines pre-learning and face to face learning for a convenient and cost effective approach. Pre-learning can be completed online prior to the course followed by a one day face-to-face session which includes hands-on practice and real-life scenarios to consolidate your first aid knowledge and skills. Following the online learning, progressive assessment throughout the face-to-face session, including demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge. Note that the provision of CPR must be demonstrated on the floor. A nationally recognised statement of attainment will be issued to all competent participants.

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support and management of casualties until the arrival of medical or other assistance.

+ Assessing an emergency situation

+ Airway and breathing management, including choking and drowning

+ CPR techniques, defibrillation and AED safety and maintenance

+ First Aid management of the unconscious casualty

+ Medical conditions including cardiac, stroke, diabetes and seizures

+ Asthma, allergy and anaphylaxis

+ Contents of First Aid kits

+ Infection control and First Aid for minor wounds

+ Control of major external bleeding and shock

+ Hyperthermia and hypothermia

+ Venomous bites and stings

+ Poisons / Burns

+ Eye injuries / Soft tissue injuries

+ Dislocations and fracture management

+ Head, neck and spinal injuries

+ Incident reports

+ Debriefing and review of critical incidents

Entry requirements:

There are no prerequisite units for entry into the ‘Standard’ blended-delivery course. *For entry into the ‘Express’ blended-delivery course, LivCor requires a current, valid certificate for HLTAID003. All participants will need the ability to meet the physical demands of providing first aid. Participants will also need oral communication skills to make an accurate verbal report to emergency services as well as the written communication skills needed for completion of a First Aid Incident Report. Prior to the start of face-to-face training, there is a short quiz to check language, literacy and numeracy skills and to authenticate the pre-work.
